Earlier this afternoon, officers arrested 28-year-old Des Abner after a tense encounter on W. 38th Street. The incident began when officers noticed Abner walking in the roadway. They quickly recognized him and, recalling his history of evading police, approached him with caution.
As they attempted to speak with Abner, they noticed a gun tucked into the waistband of his pants. Despite repeated commands to stop, Abner ignored the officers and continued walking. Concerned that he might try to flee, officers deployed two rounds of JPX pepper spray in his direction.
True to their suspicions, Abner took off running. However, his escape attempt was short-lived as he tripped and was swiftly taken into custody. Upon his arrest, officers discovered that the handgun he was carrying had been reported stolen in Magnolia, Arkansas.
Abner was transported to the Bi-State Jail, where he now faces charges of Theft of a Firearm, Evading Arrest with Previous Conviction, and Walking in the Roadway. As of now, his bond has not been set for the two felony charges.
