United Way of Greater Texarkana Launches Annual “Stuff the Bus” Campaign to Support Local Students

As the countdown to a new school year begins, the United Way of Greater Texarkana, Inc. is once again rallying the community to ensure every student starts the year equipped and ready to learn. The organization officially kicked off its annual “Stuff the Bus” campaign, a much-loved initiative focused on collecting school supplies for local children in need.

The campaign, now underway, aims to gather a wide variety of essential items — from backpacks and notebooks to crayons, pencils, and glue sticks — all destined for students in Texarkana Independent School District, Pleasant Grove Independent School District, Liberty Eylau, TASD, and surrounding areas. Organizers are especially encouraging monetary donations, which allow them to stretch resources further by purchasing supplies in bulk.

Jennifer Lewis, Chair of the Stuff the Bus Committee, emphasized the importance of the effort: “The ‘Stuff the Bus’ campaign is a vital part of our commitment to supporting Texarkana’s youth. For many families, the cost of school supplies can be a significant burden. This event helps alleviate that stress and ensures that all students, regardless of their family’s financial situation, can start the school year feeling prepared and confident. Monetary donations really are best, as we can save a lot of money by buying supplies in bulk.”

Last year’s campaign was met with overwhelming community support, resulting in thousands of supplies distributed across local schools. Organizers are hoping to surpass those numbers this year, especially as many families continue to face economic challenges.

In addition to the core United Way volunteers, members of the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department’s P.R.I.D.E. program will also be on hand to assist with collections and community outreach.

Local businesses, civic groups, churches, and individuals are encouraged to host mini-drives to gather supplies ahead of the main collection event or to contribute financially.

“Every pencil, every notebook, every backpack makes a difference,” added Lewis. “Together, we can ensure that every child in Texarkana has a successful and enriching academic year.”

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
