One of the region’s premier equestrian events is set to return in a big way as the 19th Annual Runnin’ WJ Ranch Barrel Race rides into the Four States Fairgrounds June 12–14.
Thousands of barrel racers will be in Texarkana over the weekend, as the event has grown into one of the top three largest equestrian events in the United States, drawing competitors and spectators from across the country.
The multi-day event features non-stop racing for three days and nights, creating a high-energy atmosphere at the fairgrounds. Best of all, admission is free for spectators, making it an easy and exciting outing for families across the Ark-La-Tex.
Festivities begin earlier in the week with exhibitions scheduled June 9–12. Gates open Tuesday, June 9 at 1 p.m. for early arrivals, with riders able to purchase time slots to practice in the main arena.
Competition officially ramps up Thursday, June 11, with the KK Run for Vegas beginning at 7 p.m., giving participants a chance to qualify for larger national events.
The main competition begins Friday, June 12, with the Friday 5D Open, featuring $1,000 in added prize money. Books open at 8:30 a.m., with competition starting at noon.
Action continues Saturday, June 13, with the Saturday 5D Open, offering $5,000 in added cash. Books open at 7:30 a.m., and racing begins at 8 a.m.
The event wraps up Sunday, June 14, with another 5D Open and $5,000 added, also beginning at 8 a.m.
In addition to the racing, attendees can enjoy vendor booths, food, and a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the weekend. A church service is scheduled for Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m.
The event also serves a greater purpose. The barrel race is a major fundraiser for Runnin’ WJ Ranch in Texarkana, Texas, a nonprofit organization that provides equine-assisted therapy for individuals with special needs, helping improve quality of life through interaction with horses.
Organizers say the continued growth of the Runnin’ WJ Ranch Barrel Race has made it a signature event for Texarkana, bringing significant economic impact while supporting a mission that benefits the community.
