Harvest Regional Food Bank is putting out an urgent call for volunteers to help harvest two acres of fresh corn that will be distributed to families across the region.
Thanks to a generous donation from a Little River County farmer, the food bank will receive approximately two acres of corn, but volunteers are needed to help pick it before it can be delivered to local food pantries.
Volunteers will meet at the Foreman Rest Stop, located at the intersection of Highway 32 and Highway 41 near Foreman, Arkansas, on Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16. Harvesting will take place from 8:00 a.m. until noon each day.
Organizers say volunteers of all ages are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a hat and wear closed-toe shoes or boots while working in the field.
According to Harvest Regional Food Bank CEO Camille Wrinkle, the annual corn donation provides fresh produce to more than 90 food pantries throughout the organization’s 10-county service area.
“Even if you only have an hour or two to help, a little bit of time makes all the difference,” Wrinkle said. “We would never be able to harvest this much corn if we didn’t have a lot of help from the community each year, and the best part is knowing it is going to families who may not have access to fresh produce otherwise.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can call Harvest Regional Food Bank at 870-774-1398 or email development@hrfb.org for more information or to sign up.
Organizers say every helping hand will make a difference in getting thousands of ears of fresh corn from the field to families in need.
