Bowie County Warns of Potential Real Estate Listing Scam

The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents and real estate professionals about a potential real estate scam involving the fraudulent listing of properties for sale.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, an unknown individual has been contacting local real estate companies in an attempt to list properties that do not belong to them. Investigators say the caller discontinues communication when asked to provide a legal description, deed, or valid seller identification.

Officials note that it is unclear how the scam would ultimately be profitable, as the sale of real estate requires the involvement of a title company, and the fraud would almost certainly be discovered during a standard title search. However, authorities say the attempts are concerning and warrant public awareness.

The Bowie County Sheriff’s Office is urging Bowie County and Arklatex residents—especially realtors and real estate professionals—to remain vigilant and to follow established verification and listing protocols when handling property transactions.

Anyone who believes they may have been contacted in connection with this suspected scam is encouraged to report the incident to local law enforcement.
