Kiwanis Club of Texarkana Launches Inaugural K.I.D.S. Camp for Children with Diabetes

The Kiwanis Club of Texarkana proudly hosted its first-ever K.I.D.S. Camp (Kids Improving Diabetes Safety) from June 9–13, 2025, at Camp Preston Hunt, marking a meaningful milestone in the organization’s long-standing mission to uplift and support youth in the community.

The camp, a concept first envisioned more than 30 years ago by local advocate Mary Jackson, was designed as a unique, inclusive day camp tailored specifically for children living with diabetes. This year, that vision finally came to life — offering young campers a safe, fun-filled environment where they could learn, connect, and gain confidence in managing their condition.

Throughout the week, children participated in a range of activities, from outdoor adventures and team-building games to diabetes-friendly cooking classes, arts and crafts, and educational workshops led by healthcare professionals and trained volunteers. Each activity was thoughtfully designed to foster independence, encourage healthy habits, and build a supportive community among children who face similar health challenges.

“This camp was born out of a desire to fill a gap in our community,” said Destiny Carter, Camp Coordinator and Kiwanis President-Elect. “We wanted to create a space where children with diabetes feel seen, supported, and celebrated. Judging by the joy on their faces all week long, I think we absolutely achieved that.”

The camp was made possible through the generosity of local sponsors, healthcare partners, volunteers, and the ongoing fundraising efforts of the Kiwanis Club of Texarkana. Notably, the camp was offered completely free of charge to all participating families, ensuring no child was turned away due to financial constraints.

Founded in 1915, the Kiwanis Club of Texarkana remains dedicated to improving the lives of children through service projects, leadership initiatives, and community partnerships. The success of the inaugural K.I.D.S. Camp is the latest example of the club’s enduring commitment to making a positive, lasting impact in the Texarkana region.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
