Kiwanis Club of Texarkana to Host K.I.D.S. Day Camp for Children with Diabetes

The Kiwanis Club of Texarkana is stepping up to continue a beloved tradition by hosting the K.I.D.S. (Kids Improving Diabetes Safely) Day Camp for children living with diabetes. The special summer camp is set for June 9-13, 2025, at Camp Preston Hunt, offering a fun and educational experience for youth with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes.

Originally founded in 1988 by Mary Jackson as a way to provide her son with a safe and supportive camping experience, K.I.D.S. Day Camp has grown into a vital resource for young people managing diabetes. For decades, a dedicated team of volunteers has helped Mary bring the camp to life, ensuring children have an opportunity to learn about their condition while enjoying classic summer camp activities. Now, with Mary retiring, the Kiwanis Club has taken the reins to preserve and grow the program.

“As a group dedicated to children and a longtime supporter of K.I.D.S. Day Camp, we are honored to continue Mary’s legacy,” a Kiwanis Club representative said. “This camp provides kids with diabetes not only the tools to manage their condition but also the confidence that they are not alone in their journey.”

The camp is free for children between the ages of 6 and 18 with diabetes, but pre-registration is required as spots are limited. Throughout the week, campers will take part in activities such as crafts, games, hiking, and swimming pool fun while also engaging in educational programs led by healthcare professionals. The goal is to empower children with the knowledge and skills to manage their diabetes while having fun in a safe and understanding environment.

The camp will be staffed by Kiwanis Club members, community volunteers, and medical personnel, with Dr. Belinda Hutchinson, M.D., overseeing the medical team. Volunteers are needed in various roles, including food service, class instruction, and medical assistance.

For families interested in registering their child or individuals looking to volunteer, visit the Kiwanis Club of Texarkana website at KIWANISCLUBOFTEXARKANA.ORG or call Destiny Carter at 903.278.8286.

With the Kiwanis Club now at the helm, K.I.D.S. Day Camp remains a beacon of hope and education for children with diabetes in the Texarkana area. As summer 2025 approaches, the organization looks forward to another year of learning, laughter, and lasting friendships at Camp Preston Hunt.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
