Literacy Council Hosts Annual Scrabble Tournament to Support Adult Education Programs

The Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties is inviting the community to put their vocabulary skills to work for a good cause during its Annual Scrabble Tournament on Saturday, June 13.

The event will be held in the Palm Room at Lofts at the Grim, located at 301 North Stateline Avenue in downtown Texarkana. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

Organizers say the tournament serves as both a fun community event and an important fundraiser supporting the Literacy Council’s mission of helping adults improve reading, language, workforce, and life skills throughout the Texarkana region.

Participants of all skill levels are encouraged to attend, whether they’re seasoned Scrabble competitors or simply enjoy a friendly challenge. Proceeds from the event will help fund literacy programs that provide educational opportunities for adults seeking to strengthen academic skills, prepare for employment, and build brighter futures for themselves and their families.

Literacy Council Director Jackie Whittington says the tournament reflects the organization’s commitment to turning words into opportunities.

Quoting former Scrabble World Champion Brian Cappelletto, Whittington noted, “The game has luck, no doubt about it. It is up to the individual player to figure out how best to minimize the bad and maximize the good.”

“Now is the time to maximize the good for literacy,” Whittington said. “Whether you’re a seasoned Scrabble player or simply enjoy a good challenge, this tournament is a great way to support educational opportunities that change lives.”

Community members are encouraged to gather a team, sharpen their vocabulary skills, and compete against some of the area’s best wordsmiths while supporting a cause that impacts lives across the region.

For additional information about the tournament or the Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties, contact the Literacy Council at 903-255-7576 or visit literacytxk.org.

The Literacy Council provides functional literacy education designed to empower learners to achieve academic success, develop life skills, and improve workplace competencies throughout Bowie and Miller Counties and the surrounding region.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
