The Miller County 4-H program is once again spreading holiday cheer with its annual Santas for Seniors initiative, offering the community a meaningful way to brighten the season for residents in a local Arkansas care facility.
The program invites community members to visit the Miller County Extension Office and select a name tag from the Christmas tree on display. Each tag includes the name of a senior resident along with a short wish list of simple, practical gifts. Many of the requested items are small but heartfelt — things like body spray, chocolate candies, cozy socks, and other inexpensive comforts that make a big difference during the holidays.
Participants are asked to return wrapped gifts—wrapped in a way that can be easily opened—to the Miller County Extension Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on December 17. Local 4-H youth will then personally deliver the presents to the seniors on December 18, helping spread joy while also learning the value of service and community connection.
According to the American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing, creating a warm and festive environment can make the holidays especially meaningful for care facility residents. Suggestions include decorating rooms, encouraging storytelling about holiday traditions, hosting joint celebrations with staff and residents, and inviting children to visit. The Santas for Seniors program helps support these efforts by reminding older adults that they are valued, remembered, and appreciated.
“This isn’t just about giving gifts,” organizers say. “It’s about giving our youth and community members the chance to experience the joy of giving while reminding our seniors that they matter.”
The Christmas tree with the seniors’ name tags is located inside the Miller County Extension Office at 1007 Jefferson Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas. Only 32 names are available this year, so residents are encouraged to stop by soon and choose a recipient.
