Last Thursday, a routine day at one of the local hospitals took an unexpected turn when 65-year-old Timothy Smith walked into the emergency room. Smith, not showing any signs of illness, had an unusual favor to ask – he wanted the hospital staff to test his methamphetamine to ensure its safety.
In a state of disbelief, hospital staff asked Smith to take a seat and assured him they would be right back. However, sensing the gravity of the situation, they discreetly called 911 while Smith waited.
Officers Dacota Taylor and Dewey Fleming promptly responded to the call, engaging in a conversation with Smith to understand the nature of his request. To everyone’s surprise, a hospital employee took the initiative to directly ask Smith to display the drugs he wanted tested. Smith, seemingly nonchalant, reached into his pocket and produced a baggie containing 1.2 grams of methamphetamine.
Understanding the legal implications, law enforcement officers arrested Smith on the spot. He now faces charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance and has been booked into the Bi-State Jail. As of the latest update, Smith remains in custody, with his bond set at $7,500.
The incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected situations that can unfold in emergency rooms. Smith’s peculiar request for a meth safety check took a turn that likely surprised both hospital staff and law enforcement. It also highlights the vigilance and quick response of the hospital and law enforcement personnel in managing a situation that could have escalated further.
