Tragedy struck the Miller County Detention Center early Friday morning, December 13, 2024, when an inmate was found unresponsive in his cell. According to authorities, detention staff conducting routine security checks and escorting inmates discovered 21-year-old Hayden Phipps hanging in his cell at approximately 5:51 a.m.

Staff immediately initiated life-saving measures and called for assistance. The facility’s on-site nurse, Lifenet EMS, and Miller County Deputies responded to the scene in a concerted effort to revive Phipps. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

The Miller County Coroner was notified, and Phipps’ body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for further examination. The Arkansas State Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing.

Phipps, a Texarkana resident, had been held at the detention center on a combination of felony and misdemeanor charges.

This unfortunate event marks another reminder of the mental health challenges faced within correctional facilities. Authorities have not released additional details at this time as they continue their investigation.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
