The Altrusa International Club of Texarkana has some great events for local children at the Texarkana Public Library in downtown. All in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the first Moon landing.

    Media Release:

President Tammi Drewery states that Altrusa International of Texarkana, TX, Inc. has received a $2500 grant from Altrusa International Foundation, Inc. for the Space Odyssey Programs this summer at the Texarkana Public Library.

“Altrusa of Texarkana is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the First Moon Landing and Moon Walk by providing various “space” activities for local school children”, Ms. Drewery states.

The Foundation grant funded the following:

Banners were made and posted in front of the library for promotion of Space Odyssey 2019.

A space-themed literary contest was held for local sixth to eighth graders from four schools called “Space Odyssey 2019 Sybil Rash Writing Contest”. Sybil Rash was a teacher in Texarkana who loved our library. Monetary prizes and a reception will be awarded by Altrusans to the top three writing contest winners on Saturday, July 20th at the library. Winning entries will be published in the Texarkana Gazette.

Two Virtual Helmets with a documentary about the First Moon Landing and First Moon Walk were donated to the library for use by students and others in the library.

A Space Timeline Panel of Events and Photos of Space were produced and displayed for viewing in the library.

A Star Lab, on loan from the Junior League of Texarkana, was set up in the library for children to go through followed by a Space Story Reading on July 16.

Three Rocket Launches for various ages of children to make and launch rockets at the library will be directed by Assistant Principal of Liberty-Eylau Middle School Camelya Vaughn on July 17. Approximately 60 children have signed up to participate.

All of these events were sponsored by the Texarkana Public Library and Altrusa of Texarkana to help children learn about the history and fun of space exploration.

Altrusa International of Texarkana, TX, Inc is a local service club, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, part of Altrusa International, Inc., who is committed to literacy and other projects for “leading to a Better Community”.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
