In a weird turn of events, Wake Village law enforcement officials have apprehended a suspect deemed worthy of a “dumbest criminal” award nomination. The Wake Village Texas Police Department, in collaboration with the Nash Police Department, orchestrated a sting operation that led to the arrest of Steven Burton, a local resident accused of stealing and reselling tires.
The investigation began when a Nash officer, in search of used tires, stumbled upon Burton’s online marketplace listings showcasing multiple sets of tires. What caught the officer’s attention was that the backdrop in Burton’s photos resembled the back lot of a tire store in the village. Sensing foul play, Wake Village detectives delved deeper and discovered Burton’s frequent unauthorized visits to the store, where he was allegedly conducting illicit tire sales.
Putting their plan, dubbed “Operation Notsosmart,” into action, officers from both departments set up a sting operation to apprehend Burton. Under the guise of prospective buyers, they lured Burton into a deal, conveniently omitting the crucial detail of a pending felony warrant for his arrest. True to form, Burton took the bait, driven by his apparent greed for money.
To his shock, Burton found himself face-to-face with law enforcement officers upon arriving at the agreed-upon location, marked patrol cars serving as an unwelcome surprise. The arrest was swift, and officers recovered numerous stolen tires from Burton’s vehicle.
Now in custody, Burton faces charges related to the theft and illegal sale of tires. As he contemplates his next steps from the confines of Bi-State Jail, authorities urge anyone who may have purchased tires from Burton to contact the Wake Village Police Department at 903-838-5580.
Burton’s misadventure serves as a cautionary tale, highlighting the consequences of engaging in criminal activity. It remains to be seen whether Burton’s future choices will reflect greater wisdom than his recent endeavors.
