By Jeff Easterling on July 12, 2024 City News

The Ark-La-Tex region faced severe weather conditions on Monday, July 8, as Beryl, downgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, moved through the area after striking the Texas coast. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Shreveport was exceptionally busy, issuing a record-breaking 67 warnings and confirming 19 tornadoes.

The NWS office in Shreveport confirmed these numbers on Thursday, July 11, highlighting the unprecedented scale of the event.

Tragically, one woman, aged 30, lost her life in Benton due to the storm. Her two young children and her mother were injured when at least two trees fell on their property.

In Texarkana, the Beverly community and surrounding areas experienced significant damage. Despite the destruction, the community has shown remarkable resilience, coming together to support those affected.

As always, trust TexarkanaFYI.com for reliable weather information and updates. Stay safe and informed as we continue to navigate these challenging weather events.

The National Weather Service in Shreveport released this information and we are publishing as released:

The tornado, which we believefirst began over the water on Toledo Bend, first startedproducing damage along the shoreline just south of Holly ParkMarina. As the tornado moved to the northwest we believe it madebrief contact with an RV park at the Holly Park Marina where itoverturnedand tossed a couple of RV‘s, completely destroyingthem. The tornado also threw a few boats, ruined a boat dock, completely destroyed a small fish cleaning stationand snapped anumber of large hardwood trees. The tornado then moved back outover the water before making contact with the shoreline south ofNine Mile Road. Damage was then seen to a number of trees alongEast Hamilton Road northeastward onto some land that wasprivately owned where it snappedand uprooted a large number oftrees. All indication points towards the tornado then going backover the waterand dissipating before causing any further damageupstream. Many thanks go to the Sabine County Office of Emergency Managementfor their assistance inthis survey. The tornado thentracked to the northwest, crossing County Road2100 where itcaused significant damage to a number of hardwoodand softwoodtrees. The road network became spotty from here but we were ableto pick up the track again on FM417 E about a half a mile eastof Shelbyville where a large number of trees were snappedanduprooted. Unfortunately due to a lack of roads, the track wasnotpicked up again till it entered a neighborhood south of SardisTexas alongand south of FM414 on County Roads3051,3054,and3057. Aside from the widespread destruction of both hardwoodandsoftwood trees, a number of homes sustained damage to their roofsfrom both the110 mph winds produced by the tornadoand treesfalling on homes. Thankfully there were no reported injuries fromthis location. The tornado continued to track to the northwest
producing significant tree damage along County Road3505 andCounty Road3046 north of Sardis Texas. We believe the tornadocontinued to track to the northwest, however, due to a number ofprivate roadsand a largeprivate hunting area, we were unable toaccess many areas through the Bone Hill area although we couldsee damage through the treesand large fences so we stronglybelieve the tornado remained on the ground through these areas.Part of the reason we believe it remained on the ground is theamount of tree damage found southwest of James Texas along SH-7.In addition to the trees, a home also sustained roof damage fromthe tornado along with downed power lines. From here we were ableto maintain the track as the tornado continued to travel to thenorthwest along County Road3140 just northwest of James Texas.Tree damage continued along County Roads3140,3148,3156,and3129 before the tornado lifted near the Jericho Creek...Tornado #12: Western Toledo Bend/Southeast Shelby County, TX…Rating: EF1Estimated Peak Wind:110 mphPath Length /statute/:4.16 milesPath Width /maximum/:530 yardsFatalities:0Injuries:0Start Date:07/08/2024Start Time:03:29 PM CDTStart Location:11 SW Noble / Shelby County / TXStart Lat/Lon:31.5918 / –93.8391End Date:07/08/2024End Time:03:35 PM CDTEnd Location:8 SSE Huxley / Shelby County / TXEnd Lat/Lon:31.6512 / –93.8518Survey Summary:The outer rainbands of Tropical Storm Beryl produced another EF-1 tornado with max winds of110 mph on the western shoreline ofToledo Bend near the East Hamilton area. Thankfully there was no damage to the homes inthis area but there were a significant amount of trees uprootedand snapped, which blocked the roads. We believe the tornadostarted over the lakeand move over land acrossthis area. Thetornado then tracked well east of County Road2799 through someprivate roads that we were unable to access. Thanks to the helpof a local oil/gas worker, we were able to obtain drone footagethat confirmed the tornado continued alongthis area with a clearcut path shown. We were able to accessand confirm more damagealong FS Road148 and FS Road135 where a small camp hadsignificant damage to some of their smaller buildingsand anumber of trees. After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
