The Texarkana Texas Police Department is investigating the death of an 88-year-old man that had been gathering aluminum cans after he was struck by a vehicle on Mall Drive. He was transported to the hospital where he died from injuries.

    Media Release:

The Texarkana Texas Police Department is investigating a crash where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Mall Drive lateTuesday.  Jewel Maxwell Jr., 88, of Texarkana Texas, died as a result of his injuries.

Officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of Mall Drive (in front of Olive Garden) to the report of a pedestrian having been hit by a vehicle at approximately 10:00 last night.

The traffic investigators have determined that Maxwell was picking up cans in the area and was attempting to walk south across the roadway toward Central Mall.  He was struck by an eastbound 2018 Chevrolet van that was driven by Victor Annan, 61, of Owensboro, Kentucky.  Annan told investigators that he didn’t see Maxwell until it was too late.

Maxwell was transported to Christus St. Michael Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Officers were able to identify Maxwell after family members reported him as missing from his Texarkana home shortly after the crash.

The crash continues to be investigated at this time.
