After years of vacancy and failed redevelopment attempts, the iconic Historic Hotel Grim has undergone a remarkable transformation and has reopened its doors as the “Lofts at Grim.” The newly renovated establishment, now offering affordable-rate apartments, marks a significant milestone in Texarkana’s downtown revitalization efforts.
The history of the Hotel Grim dates back to July 13, 1923, when citizens of Texarkana gathered to discuss the necessity of a modern hotel in the area. With overwhelming support from the community, a joint committee spearheaded the project, ultimately raising over $800,000 from local businessmen to fund its construction.
Designed by architects from Little Rock and featuring a grand lobby and the renowned Palm Room on the first two floors, the Hotel Grim quickly became a symbol of luxury and hospitality upon its formal opening in July 1925. However, after serving the community for 65 years, the hotel closed its doors in October 1990, facing decades of neglect and unsuccessful redevelopment endeavors.
Developer Cohen Esrey, whose company spearheaded the recent renovation, described the project as one of the most intricate and layered undertakings in the state’s history of historic preservation and housing credits. The revitalized Lofts at Grim now offer 93 affordable rate apartments, predominantly one-bedroom units, boasting modern amenities such as walk-in closets, vinyl tile flooring, energy-efficient windows, and stainless steel appliances.
Rental prices for the apartments range from $595 to $758 monthly, making them accessible to a wide range of residents. The decision to name the hotel “Grim” pays homage to Mr. William Rhodes Grim, a prominent Texarkana figure known for his generosity and contributions to the community. Mr. Grim’s legacy lives on through the newly revitalized establishment, serving as a testament to the city’s rich history and ongoing commitment to progress.
As the Lofts at Grim open their doors to residents once again, they represent not only a modern living space but also a celebration of Texarkana’s heritage and the enduring spirit of its citizens.
