Hometown Heroes: Damien Davis, Founder of the Damien Davis Foundation

By Jeff Easterling on August 1, 2017 City News, Hometown Heroes

It is a real privilege to name Damien Davis as our August 2017 Texarkana FYI Hometown Hero. Damien is an everyday man, that wanted to do what he could to help the less fortunate in the community and the Damien Davis Foundation was created just for that and continues to grow.

Damien Davis began feeding hot dogs to the hungry from a table set up in his front yard back in 2013. Since the beginning, his efforts to help the less fortunate in our community have only grown. Now, once a month, the Damien Davis Foundation hosts an event under the viaduct bridge in downtown Texarkana. More than just hot dogs, the foundation now has grown to provide clothing, shoes, personal hygiene items, toys for the kids, hot meals, fellowship and most of all, the love of the Lord through the many volunteers influenced by Damien and his drive to help those that need it most.

These monthly gatherings are a labor of Love for Mr. Davis. The foundation accepts donations of clothing, goods, and money, but when something more is needed. Mr. Davis covers the costs from his own funds. One of his nominations goes on to say,

“Everything comes out of Damien’s pocket. He is so humble that he never once complains. He never asks for help or anything. It has just become a second nature to him now. Many people overlook the foundation because Damien isn’t a “known” person in the community, but we hope to change that soon!”

    Damien told us,

“When I was young, my parents were always big in helping the needy and that influenced me. When I got a little older and more financially stable, it’s something I wanted to start doing to help those in the community that need. It. I am big on helping the children. It hurts my heart to see these children struggling. I love seeing the smiles on these kids faces. We don’t take any money from this, everything is going back to help these people. That’s why we do it, for the people.”

For more information, call Damien Davis at 903-559-2733 or Brittany Golston at 903-934-1850 or follow the Damien Davis Foundation at the Facebook page.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
