Texarkana police arrested 45-year-old Jeffrey Troxel on Friday night after he allegedly attacked an officer during a tense encounter on W. 11th Street.
According to authorities, Sgt. Nick Tirone responded to a call about a man reportedly pulling a gun on someone during an argument in front of a home in the 1600 block. When Sgt. Tirone arrived, he found a man matching the suspect’s description standing next to a motorcycle in the street.
When questioned about the incident, the man—later identified as Troxel—claimed he had no knowledge of the disturbance. Given the reported presence of a firearm, Sgt. Tirone attempted to pat Troxel down for weapons. However, instead of complying, Troxel reached into his jacket pocket.
Fearing he was drawing a weapon, Sgt. Tirone grabbed Troxel’s arm, but Troxel responded by punching the officer in the face and launching a violent assault. During the struggle, Troxel repeatedly struck Sgt. Tirone and even attempted to grab his firearm multiple times. Despite the attack, Sgt. Tirone was able to subdue Troxel until Officer Conner Melton arrived to assist in securing and handcuffing him.
Police believe Troxel was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Bi-State Jail.
Sgt. Tirone suffered bruises to his face and ears, as well as scrapes on his knees and elbows. Fortunately, his injuries were not severe, and he was able to finish his shift that night.
Troxel is now facing a felony charge of Assault on a Peace Officer. Additionally, he had an outstanding warrant for Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon related to a stabbing in DeKalb earlier this month. His total bond was set at $260,000.
Police officials commended Sgt. Tirone for his quick thinking and bravery, expressing gratitude that he was not seriously injured.
