Drivers traveling westbound on Interstate 30 through Texarkana will encounter new traffic patterns this week as part of the ongoing project to widen the highway from four lanes to six lanes, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
Since June 2024, eastbound I-30 traffic between Summerhill Road and State Line Avenue has been shifted onto the frontage road while crews worked to replace the eastbound interstate bridge over the railroad. Now, with that work nearing completion, traffic is set to return to the main lanes.
Beginning tonight at 8 p.m. and lasting until about 6 a.m., eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane while crews make the transition back onto the newly constructed main lanes. Once completed, both eastbound lanes will reopen.
Then, starting Tuesday at 8 p.m., westbound drivers will see additional changes as crews set up a new traffic pattern:
-
Westbound left lane traffic will shift onto the new pavement and be designated as a “left-thru lane” for the entire six-mile stretch of the project—from just east of Summerhill Road to west of Kings Highway. Vehicles in this lane will have no option to exit.
-
Westbound right lane traffic will be designated as “right-local lane” for local access, continuing along the existing westbound right interstate main lane.
Additionally, nightly ramp work will occur from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., requiring westbound right-local lane traffic to temporarily detour onto the frontage road. During daytime hours, right-local traffic will remain on the main interstate lanes.
Drivers are urged to slow down and use extra caution when traveling through the area, particularly during the nighttime work hours.
The interstate widening project is a major effort to improve traffic flow and safety for Texarkana and is expected to continue through the coming months.
