After almost four decades of helping customers celebrate life’s milestones, Party City is officially closing its doors. The company’s CEO, Barry Litwin, broke the difficult news to corporate employees during a video conference call Friday, announcing that all operations would wind down immediately, and Friday would mark the final day of employment for many staff members.
“That is without question the most difficult message that I’ve ever had to deliver,” Litwin said during the meeting. Despite the company’s “very best efforts,” Party City was unable to overcome its financial challenges, leading to the decision to cease operations.
“It’s really important for you to know that we’ve done everything possible that we could to try to avoid this outcome,” Litwin added. “Unfortunately, it’s necessary to commence a winddown process immediately.”
The announcement sent ripples through communities across the country, including here in Texarkana. In a social media post, Party City of Texarkana shared, “Sad to announce! Party City will be closing all locations by the end of February!” The post prompted an outpouring of nostalgia and disappointment from customers who have relied on the retailer for party supplies, costumes, and seasonal decorations.
The retail landscape has been particularly challenging in recent years. Party City isn’t the only major chain to face tough times. Big Lots also recently announced the closure of all its stores following a failed sale of the company, and Walmart has begun scaling back, closing two Walmart Supercenters and nine Neighborhood Markets in states like California, Georgia, Maryland, and Ohio.
For Party City, the closure marks the end of an era. Founded in 1986, the company became synonymous with celebrations, offering everything from birthday balloons to holiday décor. As Party City bows out, it leaves behind fond memories for customers and employees alike who helped make life’s moments just a little brighter.
