TEXARKANA, Texas – Courtney Hubbart with the Texas A&M University-Texarkana history department will present “The Science of Witchcraft” at a Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) lecture on Halloween, Oct. 31, at 12:15 p.m. in University Center 326 on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.
This free event is open to the public.
“In the 15th and 16th centuries, Europe saw the spread of one of the most fascinating outbreaks of witchcraft hysteria in history. These early modern people lived in fear of those living among them with ungodly supernatural abilities and hunted them down with religious furor,” said Hubbart. “This Halloween, we will discuss the events that led to this outbreak of witchcraft accusations and the ‘sciences’ developed to uncover the witches who plagued the minds and bodies of their neighbors.”
Hubbart holds a Master of Arts in European History from Texas Tech University and has served as an adjunct professor of history at A&M-Texarkana since 2016.
PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large. PLACE chooses an annual theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion. This year’s theme is “Science and Technology.”
