TEXARKANA, Texas – Texas A&M University-Texarkana and the Bowie County Master Gardeners will host a series of free fall gardening workshops to providetechniques and information about gardening in the Ark-La-Tex.

Classes are set for Mondays, Oct. 9, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, from 6-8 p.m. in Room 306 of the Science and Technology building on the A&M-Texarkana campus, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas. The Science and Technology building is conveniently located next to the main parking area.

“Soil vs. Dirt” will be the topic of the Oct. 9 session featuring Noelle Hood. In her presentation, Hood will cover soil as a living environment that contains microorganisms, decaying organic matter, earthworms and other insects and how to revitalize dirt, which is basically dead soil, by adding organic matter or compost.

The discussion on “Composting” will continue on Nov. 13 with a presentation by Ken Kunkel, who will cover the basics of composting and its many benefits as one of the most well-known fertilizers available.

On Dec. 11, Andrea Thomas will cover “Landscape Trees for the Local Area” and how to select trees that will thrive in a given set of site conditions to maximize long-term tree survival, reduce maintenance costs and maximize benefits.

The Bowie County Master Gardeners is a volunteer organization of horticultural enthusiasts. Master Gardeners receive extensive training in horticulture and provide volunteer service through approved projects in their communities.

To register for the classes, call Shelley Caraway at (903) 334-6683 or write toEECD@tamut.edu.

After more than 40 years with commercial broadcasting, I decided to do my own thing by blogging, and taking "unconsultant" gigs. It affords me the ability to stay super involved in the community, but still, have plenty of time with my 3 granddaughters and other projects.
