TEXARKANA — WINTER STORM WARNING / COLD WEATHER PREPAREDNESS

By Jeff Easterling on January 22, 2026 City News, Weather

The Texarkana area is now under a Winter Storm Warning beginning Friday evening at 6 PM and lasting through Sunday at noon, according to the National Weather Service in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Forecasters say this will not be a quick overnight event. Texarkana is expected to remain below freezing for up to 72 consecutive hours, with single-digit temperatures possible Monday morning. Winter precipitation is expected, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with snow accumulations of up to three inches possible in some areas.

Some experts are comparing the potential impact to the Christmas 2000 Ice Storm, which caused widespread power outages for weeks and dangerous travel conditions across the region.

    BIGGEST CONCERNS: POWER & TRAVEL

The primary concern with this storm is the potential for extended power outages. Ice accumulation on trees and power lines, combined with prolonged freezing temperatures, increases the risk of outages that could last hours — or longer.

The second major concern is travel. Roads may quickly become hazardous due to snow, sleet, and ice. Officials strongly urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, especially overnight and early morning hours when conditions are most dangerous.

    If you must drive:

    • Slow down and increase following distance

    • Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle

    • Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to arrive

HOW TO PREPARE NOW — BEFORE FRIDAY

    For Your Home

    • Test heaters, fireplaces, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors

    • Cover all exterior faucets and drip indoor faucets

    • Open cabinets under sinks to allow warm air to circulate

    • Seal doors and windows to keep heat inside

    • Use portable heaters and generators safely and properly

    • Gather flashlights, batteries, candles, and extra blankets

    • Turn off sprinkler systems to prevent ice buildup

For Your Family, Friends, and Pets

    • Have at least three days of non-perishable food, water, and medications

    • Bring pets indoors or ensure they have adequate warmth and fresh water

    • Make sure everyone has warm clothing and blankets

    • Keep phones charged and ensure Wireless Emergency Alerts are enabled

    For Your Vehicle

    • Keep a full tank of gas

    • Stock an emergency kit including:

      • First aid supplies

      • Cell phone charger

      • Jumper cables

      • Blankets, hats, gloves, and boots

      • Water and snacks

      • Ice scraper or brush

IF YOU LOSE POWER — STAY WARM, STAY SAFE

    If electricity is lost:

    • Wear layers and use blankets to conserve body heat

    • Close off unused rooms to retain warmth

    • Never use grills, generators, or propane heaters indoors

    • Check on elderly neighbors and those with medical needs

    WARMING SHELTERS AVAILABLE

If you or someone you know needs warmth or shelter, help will be available.

    • The Randy Sams Outreach Shelter

    • The Salvation Army

    • Mission Texarkana

All will be open and ready to assist anyone who needs a warm place to go during this dangerous cold.

    FINAL WORD

This storm is not just about snow — it’s about extended freezing temperatures, possible power outages, and serious travel risks. Officials urge everyone to finish preparations before Friday evening, stay informed, and look out for one another.

For the latest updates, continue to monitor official National Weather Service statements and local emergency alerts.
