Texarkana native and Liberty-Eylau High School alumnus Jarrion Lawson has once again proven his athletic prowess by earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team. On Monday night, at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Lawson clinched his ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games with a dramatic final leap in the long jump competition.
Lawson, who had an illustrious college career at the University of Arkansas, demonstrated his seasoned composure in a high-stakes scenario. His first jump of 8.02 meters (26-6.75 feet) initially placed him in a promising second position. Despite struggling to improve his mark in subsequent attempts, that early leap was crucial in securing his place among the top contenders.
Heading into the final round, Lawson found himself in the seventh position, teetering on the edge of Olympic qualification. Faced with intense pressure, he delivered when it mattered most, achieving a season-best jump of 8.18 meters (26-10 feet). This leap tied him for second place with Malcolm Clemons from the University of Florida, both trailing only Jeremiah Davis of Florida State, who won with a jump of 8.20 meters (26-11 feet).
Lawson’s remarkable career includes a series of accolades: USA Junior and NCAA titles, a bronze medal at the 2012 World Junior Championships in Barcelona, and a silver medal at the 2017 IAAF World Championships in London. He also won the prestigious Bowerman award in 2016 and famously overcame doping allegations, later cleared due to the ingestion of tainted beef.
As Lawson prepares for the Paris Olympics, he adds another chapter to his impressive legacy, showcasing his resilience and elite talent on the global stage.
