The National Weather Service in Shreveport, Louisiana has issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of the Ark-La-Tex region, warning residents to prepare for potentially dangerous winter weather beginning Friday morning, January 23, and lasting through Sunday morning, January 25.
According to the National Weather Service, heavy accumulations of mixed wintry precipitation are possible across the entire watch area. This includes portions of south central and southwest Arkansas, north central and northwest Louisiana, southeast Oklahoma, and east and northeast Texas.
Forecasters say ice accumulation is a major concern with this system, increasing the likelihood of power outages and tree damage. Travel conditions could deteriorate rapidly, with some areas potentially becoming near impossible to navigate. Officials also caution that hazardous road conditions may continue into Monday, even after precipitation ends, due to refreezing ice on roadways.
The National Weather Service urges residents to closely monitor forecast updates as the system develops and details become clearer.
Those in the affected areas are advised to delay all travel during the watch period if possible. If travel is unavoidable, motorists should drive with extreme caution and consider carrying a winter storm emergency kit, including items such as:
-
Tire chains (if anyone around here owns them)
-
Booster cables
-
Flashlight
-
Shovel
-
Blankets and extra clothing
-
Water and a first aid kit
- Kitty-litter makes good traction
Officials stress that being prepared could be critical in the event drivers become stranded due to deteriorating conditions.
Residents across the region are encouraged to take this watch seriously and begin preparations now as forecasters continue to refine expectations for the upcoming winter storm.
