The City of Texarkana, Texas, has received a grant from the HOME Investment Partnerships Program, awarded by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs, aimed at building new homes for low-income residents. The HOME Program’s primary goal is to increase the availability of decent, safe, and affordable housing for low-income households by providing funds to demolish substandard structures and construct new homes on the same sites.
To kickstart this initiative, the Texarkana HOME Program will host a two-day event on Tuesday, October 22, and Wednesday, October 23, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Bowie County Health Center, located at 902 W 12th Street. Each day will begin with a 30-minute informational session about the program and the application process, followed by on-site assistance for applicants.
“The HOME Program is a vital resource for our community, providing much-needed support to families in need,” said Ashley Boyles, HOME Program Consultant. “We encourage all eligible homeowners to attend the event and learn how they can benefit from this opportunity.”
To qualify for the program, applicants must reside in a substandard home within the city limits, own their home, be current on property taxes, have clear title to their property, and have an income at or below 80% of the Bowie County median income. Assistance is available at no cost to homeowners, either as a five-year conditional grant or a 15-year deferred forgivable loan. If a homeowner sells within the designated timeframe, they must repay a portion of the assistance; however, once the period is complete, the grant or loan is fully forgiven.
The initial application deadline is Friday, November 8, 2024, with all supplemental materials due by Friday, November 22, 2024. Residents unable to attend the event can obtain and submit applications at Texas City Hall, located at 220 Texas Blvd, or download them from kbbhomegrants.com/texarkana. For those needing special assistance, such as language interpretation or support for disabilities, accommodations can be requested through City Hall.
